peace pole

South Burlington School District is proud to share that a new Rotary Peace Pole was installed on the FHTMS/SBHS campus on May 1. With this installation, SBSD becomes only the second location in Vermont to host this internationally recognized symbol of peace.

The project was spearheaded and fully funded by the South Burlington Rotary, whose Youth Services Committee led the effort to bring a Peace Pole to the district. SBSD is grateful for Rotary’s leadership, generosity, and commitment to creating a visible and lasting symbol of peace for our students, staff, families, and community.

Peace Poles are found in schools, parks, civic spaces, and community gathering places around the world. Each pole carries the message “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in multiple languages, serving as a visible reminder of the importance of peace, understanding, inclusion, and global citizenship.

In addition to the full-sized Peace Pole on the FHTMS/SBHS campus, a smaller version will be installed inside the district’s new Welcome Center at 577 Dorset Street when Central Enrollment relocates there this fall. The Welcome Center Peace Pole will help reinforce our commitment to ensuring that all families feel welcomed, respected, and valued from their very first interaction with the district.

The May 1 installation is the beginning of what may become a larger peace-focused space on campus. Future enhancements could include benches, pavers, landscaping, and other features that invite students, staff, families, and community members to pause, reflect, and recommit to the values represented by the Peace Pole.

SBSD thanks the South Burlington Rotary for bringing this project to life and for helping our district promote peace, understanding, and connection within our community.

May peace prevail on Earth.
