G4 PROCEDURES

SOUTH BURLINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT

GRADE ADVANCEMENT, RETENTION, ACCELERATION AND PROMOTION

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES

Students may enroll in Kindergarten if they have reached their fifth birthday on or before September 1 of the year they wish to enroll.  Students may enroll in Grade 1 if they have reached their sixth birthday on or before September 1 of the year they wish to enroll.

In Grades K-8, students will typically be promoted one grade each school year.

For any year in which the student’s teacher or parent believe the student should be accelerated or not be promoted, the principal will assemble a team to review the situation and report to the principal.  The team will include the parent and a teacher familiar with the following grade’s curriculum.  The principal’s decision on acceleration or non-promotion will be final.

In Grades 9-12, students will be promoted on the basis of credits earned or standards met toward graduation.

Advanced educational opportunities, including independent study, work-study, on-line courses, distance learning, and college courses will be provided by the School District when funds are available.
