Information for Enterprise Volunteers

WELCOME

We are glad that you have decided to become part of the Tuttle Middle School community as an Enterprise volunteer.  We want you to have success in your work with us because that will mean success for our students.  We also hope that your time at Tuttle will be pleasant and rewarding.  This handbook has been designed to assist you in becoming familiar with Tuttle Middle School.  If there is other information you would like to have, please let us know.

ENTERPRISE

Enterprise provides students with individual and small group assistance in acquiring increased skills in reading, writing, math and study skills.  Our approach with most students is to teach those skills in the context of homework that has been assigned to them for their Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies classes.  The target population for Enterprise is students who are reasonably motivated and respectful.  They are not eligible for special education services but lack skills for success with normal classroom instruction, accommodations and interventions.  Students are referred to Enterprise by Tuttle’s Educational Support Team (EST)

Enterprise in run by part-time teacher Pat Mainer; program coordinators Tara Gauding and Sissel Ann Kristiansen; and part-time instructional assistant Meghan Kelley, who also teaches Spanish at Tuttle Middle School.  Enterprise relies heavily on trained volunteers to fully staff the program.

ENTERPRISE GUIDELINES FOR VOLUNTEERS

ü      Before each period starts get the folder(s) for the student(s) with whom you will be working. Check for notes about what the student has been or should be doing in Enterprise.  Ask an Enterprise staff member for clarification.

ü      Greet and engage your students when they come to class.  Build and maintain a relationship by spending just a minute or two of each period, preferably at the beginning and end, socializing with them about their non-academic interests.  The rest of the time focus your and their energy on their learning.  Concentrate on noticing what they are doing better and freely, but sincerely praise their efforts.  Remember “80 Ways to Say Very Good”.

ü      At the end of the period write a few words in the folder about what they accomplished and how they worked and then put the folder away.  Let an Enterprise staff member know if you have any concerns.

ü      We are here to help you.  Please let us know if you need anything or are uncertain about anything.  We have hands-on material, teachers’ guides and booklets to support the Connected Math program.  We have handouts that give helpful hints for helping students improve their reading comprehension and handouts detailing how to help students improve their writing.  We have study sheets for many social studies and science units.  Please, just ask.  That’s why we are here.

ü      You should not have to deal with students who are not cooperative or motivated to learn.  Attached are the Enterprise Homework Policy and Discipline Policy.  If students don’t meet expectations, just let us know.
