• Meaningful videos--a powerful message
• "The minute you pick up a camera, you are controlling reality."
  • E.g., long-range sonar & beached whales example
• Open-ended questions
• News story vs editorial
• Commitment of interviewees--student interviews are important
• Clear purpose for video, point of view
• Marco Polo "Chicago Fire" exercise
• Expose community, build community awareness
• Library of media literacy articles/activities
• Subtitles
• Audio is key
• Sharing productions with school(s) & community at large
• Build partnerships w/ businesses
• PR (Other Paper, etc.)
• Offering trained kids as resource people for the community, Non-profits, etc.
  • Rec Dept, Police Dept, etc.
• Parent/student joint projects (ala "Book Talks")
• Open labs to public, with student mentors (e.g., Tech Thursdays)
• Funding for equipment
