Music and Sounds

Everything on the World Wide Web is automatically copyrighted, including music and sounds.  Even though it's fairly easy to find sounds on the web, you may or may not be able to legally use them.  See the Notes on Fair Use.

There are 4 categories of music and sounds listed below:

  • Royalty-Free Music--Students and teachers may use this music for non-commercial, school-related projects without paying a "royalty" to the creator. You can use this music for in-school projects, web pages, and projects to be viewed outside of school without permission, though you should still credit the source.

  • "Free" Music and Sounds--You can use these songs and sounds without asking for permission for in-school projects, web pages, and projects to be viewed outside of school, though you should still credit the source.

  • "Free" Music and Sounds, with Restrictions--You can use these songs and sounds for in-school projects and in most cases web pages and projects to be viewed outside of school as long as you carefully read and follow the "usage guidelines" on each page. You should still credit the source.

  • Copyrighted Music and Sounds: Use of these songs and sounds is limited by the "Fair Use Guidelines."

Notes on Fair Use: The "Fair Use Guidelines" say you can use 10% or 30 seconds of a copyrighted sound/song, whichever is less, for:

  • school-related projects
  • in-school projects (such as presentations given in school), but NOT on web pages
  • up to 2 years after the completion of your project

Have fun!
