SBSD Keyboarding Instruction, Grade 3 Overview
Use the ISTE Keyboard Success program (Teacher's Guide and Student Flip Book). By the end of third grade, students should be familiar with touch-typing the letter, punctuation, <Spacebar>, <Enter>, <Shift>, <Backspace>, and <Delete> keys.
Use the AlphaSmarts for keyboarding practice. See the AlphaSmart 3000 Basics handout for tips on using the AlphaSmarts.
Timed Practices:
Use the Keyboarding Technique Checklist as a reminder of what you should be watching for as students are using their keyboarding skills to work on classwork. Please feel free to use this sheet to log student mastery of keyboarding techniques, but third grade teachers are not expected to do so.
You may want to use the Customizing the Grammar Checker in Word 2000 handout to set up the Word Grammar Checker on the computers in your classroom to make it consistent with the keyboarding program's requirement for 2 spaces between sentences. There are other settings you may want to turn on (or off) as well, depending on what grammar skills you are teaching.
Use the Cumulative Keyboarding Progress Report at the end of the year to note each student's progress. Be sure to pass this sheet on to each student's next teacher.
(For an overview of the SBSD keyboarding instruction program, please see the SBSD Keyboarding Plan.)
