SBSD Keyboarding Instruction, Grades 3, 4, and 5 Overview

Use the Type to Learn 4 software for student practice and reinforcement.  Each elementary school has a site license, so Type to Learn is installed on the computers in the lab(s) and can be installed on any computer in the school.  For tips on starting to use Type to Learn, see the Getting Started with Type to Learn 4 handout.

The Keyboarding Technique Checklist lists the proper keyboarding techniques you should teach students. You can use this sheet to monitor individual student progress. We're suggesting that you assess each student's technique 3 to 5 times during the course of their practice sessions.  (Please let us know if that seems helpful or is overkill.)

Each year we set up your keyboarding classes in the Type to Learn 4 software.  You should customize the settings for your class by following the directions for your grade level, below:

Keyboarding Assessment:

If you want to adjust the settings in Type to Learn for one or more individual students (e.g., change the WPM and Accuracy goals), see Adjusting Settings for Individual Students.

You may want to use the Customizing the Grammar Checker in Word handout to set up the Word Grammar Checker on the computers in your classroom to make it consistent with the keyboarding program's requirement for 2 spaces between sentences.  There are other settings you may want to turn on (or off) as well, depending on what grammar skills you are teaching.

(For an overview of the SBSD keyboarding instruction program, please see the SBSD Keyboarding Plan.)
