Classroom Management Ideas

Either One-Computer or Multi-Computer Classroom:

Managing Computer Rotations: Draw a horizontal line on a magnetic chalkboard and place a magnet with each student's initials on it under the line. When a student finishes the computer task, s/he would move her/his magnet above the line and tell a student that was still below the line that it was her/his turn. At the end of the day, the teacher could quickly assess (without lists, checks, or interruptions) how many had done the assignment and how many had not. The next day, those who had not yet completed the assignment would be first on the computers. When all were done (all magnets above the line), she would assign the next task and change the arrow so that it now pointed down.

Skill Groups: Divide the class into 5 groups. Have one group work on the computers independentally (or as pairs or a team, as appropriate); one group work with the teacher learning a new technology (or other) skill/concept; and the other groups work independently on "skills" work (such as spelling, math problems, etc.).
